BASIC RP by Ditto
(( First of all, I'm a UO player who has never once seen a "perfect" rp'er, nor a "bad" rp'er. I'm no self-proclaimed roleplay expert, . however, I think I do know enough of the basics to help out those who are new to roleplay.)) Now, enough about me..
The Lingo:
RP = Roleplay
RP'er = Roleplayer
RL / IRL = Real Life / In Real Life
OOC = Out-of-character (Being, speaking as, your real-life self)
IC = In-Character (Being in-character, like on a movie set when the director shouts "Action")
I: PROFILES
Your "Character Profile" can be found on a tab in your paperdoll.
This is the spot other RP'ers check out to see what you "look" like. It's the spot where you write up the basic looks of your character. Height, weight, apparent age, scars, tatoos, and maybe if your character walks with a limp, or seems to have a bad odor about them. All kinds of wonderful things can be put in a profile, and added to throughout the life of your character.
If your unsure of exact detail, then I suggest you just start out with Ht, Wt, age, & race (elf, human, etc).
Things to AVOID putting in your profile are things that someone looking at your character couldn't possibly know unless they talk to you & asked you. Like where your character was born or that your sister was once married to a Centaur. Or if you were part of the great Pokemon Militia years ago, if your an orphan, etc...ect..
Key point: Describe ONLY what others looking at your character can physically see so as to avoid possible problems.
II: SMILEYS & ABBREIVIATIONS
Smileys- Those cute little screen faces aren't so cute to a roleplayer. Instead of using : + ), please use emotes like:
*smiles*, *grins*, *frowns*, *nods* *sneers* *smirks* *looks annoyed*
( Ever want to silence a room of RP'ers real quick? Just be a person who roleplays alot, then suddenly make a cute smiley. You'd think you just mutated an evil, vile, 2nd head on your shoulders or something the way some react. *grins* )
Abbreiviations- Those things we all took time "learning" what they stand for, now we should "unlearn" how to use them.
LOL, OMG, PWN, l33t, LMAO, ROFMAO
DO NOT USE THESE, nor their cousins "dewd, kewl, newb, l8r,roxxors, etc"
Remember the "setting" your in. I don't think King Arthur nor any of the Elves in LOTR used words such as those....(but it would be hillarious if they did).
Instead of "LOL", try spelling it out instead *laughs out loud* or simply *laughs*.
Instead of saying something like "Dewd your such a n00b", try saying something like.. "Sir, by your words alone I can see you are a knave!", or you can get really creative.. " May the feces from foul beasts find it's way into your ale and choke you".
Anyway, you get the idea so Have Fun With It.
**Don't Panic if you make a mistake. Think of it like a unzipped zipper. Simply zip it back up and continue on. If you really feel the need you can always have your character emote *coughs* after you've made the mistake. That's normally the unspoken code for "Yea yea, I know..I made a oppsie".
(Also, if there's someone in the room who wants to be a poopyhead & point out your mistake and make a big deal out of it....IGNORE THEM and just continue on having fun being your character.).**
III:METAGAMING and GODMODING
(To people who who don't know what these are, it probably sounds like something fun & that you want to learn how to do those neat things. DON'T!! The terms are decieving).
Metagaming - There seems to be a debate on what exactly Metagaming (meta) is. BUT, here's what most take it to mean....Taking something your character couldn't possibly know and using it IC.
Example 1: You were told OOC, over icq by your captain that the Orcs were going to raid your town. Unless your character has been told this in some way IC, he wouldn't know about it. So, if you used this information to suddenly "gear up" for battle & await the orcs at the city gates, weapon in hand....sorry, but your Metagaming, & boy o boy will that cause a stink.
Example 2: Your main character is a Guard in charge of Ditto's safety . On a different character, you see her in enemy territory passing on top secret information to one of their commanders. You suddenly hop on your Guard character and inform your higher ups of the treason you just witnessed that the Dark Lady has just committed...... Yes, you saw it but..opps sorry, wrong character. You just meta'd.
Godmoding - Simply put, this means doing (emoting) something that doesn't give the other person(s) a chance to defend against.
Example 1: Your in a tavern and in a heated argument with a soldier. The soldier suddenly emotes *unsheathes his sword and stabs you five times, cleaving your arms from your shoulder blades.* At this point you'd probably be thinking something like WTF? The soldier godmoded. What the soldier might've been better off attempting to emote would be something like *unsheathes his sword and comes at you at a lightning speed attempting to slice away at your body* It would probably be wise on your part to *steps to the side and holds up shield to block the blows*
Example 2: Maybe a more common occurance,....a young lady is besieged upon by a powerful looking orc who *reaches out to grab her*. The young lady *overpowers him and runs away* Errrr..young ladies aren't, on the average, very strong, and some aren't even fighter types. An orc is HUGE and strong and always battle ready. Lady or not, she godmoded.
(In physical confrontations that are played out in emotes you have to use your reasoning, and always give the other person a chance to counter your emote with one of his or her own. Try putting words like *tries to..* *attemps to..* *goes to..* *reaches to..* instead of automatically "doing" it.)
*********************************************************
THE MAIN THING about RP is to have fun "Being" your character. If you do that while you watch and learn, the rest will become 2nd nature.
So, get out there and start having fun watching, conversing, and experimenting.
Thanks!
<-- You did not see the "smiley" ..... *grins*
PS: You may see the word "rollplay" instead of "roleplay" in places, but thats just cause Im stupid at times and too lazy to edit everything.
